Spring is here and with it comes an array of runny noses, itchy, irritated red eyes, sneezing and sinus problems. Seasonal or not, all allergies stem from an exaggerated immune response to a substance that your body recognizes as foreign. This includes pollen, dust, bacteria, certain foods etc. that your body’s immune system seeks out to destroy.
Your immune system is governed by a combination of factors; including the nervous and endocrine systems, your diet and emotional stressors. If your immune system isn’t functioning to its full potential then your system may overreact to an allergen and produce too many neutralizing chemicals (namely the inflammatory producing substance; histamine), which generates the symptoms we recognize as Hayfever.
To combat the effects of the histamine, antihistamines can be prescribed in order to dry out the mucous membranes and help provide relief of symptoms. These, however, can cause very serious health problems (including heart problems), especially when taken for extensive periods of time. If your symptoms are chronic, then you should seek to find the underlying cause of your allergic symptoms, rather than mask them with a potentially harmful anti-histamine. This is where Chiropractic care can help to boost the immune system and help lessen allergic reactions.
The strength of your immune system depends largely on the communication of essential information and energy travelling between the brain and spinal cord. Tension, misalignments or altered movement of your spine may distort this information, which may, in turn compromise the immune system. Chiropractic care can help restore alignment to the spine and improve the function of the nervous system and thus the immune system, enabling it to function at its optimum. In addition, some studies suggest that Chiropractic adjustments may also help regulate the amount of histamine and cortisol produced during high allergy season.
As Chiropractors, we focus on holistic health, which means, we take all aspects of health into consideration. This includes the physical, emotional, chemical/nutritional and environmental aspects. So, in addition to the Chiropractic adjustment, we can also offer assistance with lifestyle and nutritional advice to help ensure that your immune system is functioning at its best.
